The Nikon D300s is a refreshed version of the popular D300. Nikon has taken the D300 and added 720p HD video recording, a faster 7 fps continuous shooting and Dual CF and SD card slots.Nikon also added a dedicated Live View and Info button. All other specifications remain the same as the D300.

The D300s provides dual card slots, enabling the simultaneous use of both CompactFlash and SD memory cards and allows photographers to select the primary recording slot. The secondary slot can record in three methods:

1. “Overflow” recording lets you use the memory capacity of the secondary card when the primary card is full, automatically;

2.“Backup” recording stores the same images on both cards. If one card fails or gets corrupted, you still have you images available on the other card;

3.“RAW primary, JPEG secondary” recording lets you record RAW data and JPEG data separately to each card.

You can also copy images between the two memory cards. And when shooting D-Movie clips, it allows you to select the slot containing the card with the most available capacity.

Other specifications of the D300s remain the same as the D300:

* 12.3 megapixel DX format CMOS sensor
* Self-cleaning sensor unit (low-pass filter vibration)
* ISO 200 - 3200 (6400 with boost)

Lens and Flash Options for the Nikon D300s

The newest macro flash that is compatible with the D300s is the Metz MS-1 wireless macro flash. The Metz MS-1 (shown above right) is fully self-contained and eliminates the need for a power pack on top of the camera. The MS-1 is fully compatible with the D300s's iTTL Commander Mode for wireless flash exposure control.

Nikon's R1 macro flash is also compatible with the D300s's iTTL Commander Mode for wireless flash exposure control. This flash includes many accessories for different types of macro photography.The R1 Macro Flash is an excellent flash for anterior esthetic images (smile shots, lab communication) as you are bringing the light from the flashes in at approximately 45 degrees from either side of the subject - the same way lights are set up on a copy stand.

The downside of the R1 is that the flashes are too far from the lens to allow easy posterior views as well as mirrors shots (occlusal and buccal).

We are now offering a new R2 Dual Point Flash Bracket that solves the positioning issue with the Nikon R1 Macro Flash. (see photo below) Click here for info on the R2 Bracket.

If you plan on using the PhotoMed R2 Bracket with Nikon's flashes, you can save by purchasing the Nikon SB-R200 flashes separately instead of in the Nikon R1 package. The Nikon R1 package includes many accessoriesthat are
not needed for clinical photography as well as a large case to hold them all. We list systems below that include (2) Nikon SB-R200 flashes and the R2-N bracket.
Sigma's EM-140DG macro flash (shown top of page left) is the final flash option for TTL flash control on the D300s. The EM-140DG is also compatible with the Nikon iTTL flash control system and simplifies taking the full range of dental photographs. It is a more "universal" flash as it can take the full range of dental views.

There are three lens options for the D300s:: the Nikon 85mm VR macro lens (12.5oz.), the Nikon 105mm VR macro lens (28oz.) and the Tokina 100mm macro lens (18oz.). All three lenses offer very similar optical quality and the Nikon lenses feature Nikon's Vibration Reduction system. The VR system makes focusing easier - a sophisticated system measures movement and counteracts the movement by shifting lens elements. If you are taking a mirror shot and you have the mirror in one hand and the camera in the other, you will be amazed how much more stable the image is in the viewfinder. The only downside of the Nikon 105 is the weight - this is a stocky, heavy lens.
